Osama bin Laden and Ratko Mladic

31 May

A navy seal team hunted down Osama bin Laden, found him in a Pakistani compound shot and killed him, and then dumped his body in the ocean.   No indictment, no trial, no witnesses against bin Laden for the whole world to hear about his alleged masterminding of the attacks on 9/11 and other terrorist acts.  On May 26, nearly four weeks after bin Laden was “taken out” by the seals, police captured former Serbian general and alleged war criminal Ratko Mladic in his native country.

The fraud of school budget elections

29 May

According to The Record (May 29th), 15 North Jersey school budgets were defeated in April, and yet virtually no cuts have been made after town councils reviewed the budgets.  Most councils reinstated the original school districts’ spending plans or cut the budgets by an insignificant amount.  If a school budget is defeated, state law allows the town council to alter the budget or leave it intact.  The school board then has the right to appeal to the state Department of Education.

Circumcisions, abortions and human rights

23 May

The City of San Francisco (where else?) will have an initiative on the ballot in November banning circumcisions on males under 18 years of age.   Male circumcision has been a religious ritual for thousand of years among Jews.  Muslims also practice circumcision.  According to one of the initiative’s supporters, “It’s excruciatingly painful and permanently damaging surgery that’s forced on men when they’re at their weakest and most vulnerable.”

How to end U.S. wars

21 May

What is the difference between George W. Bush and Barack Obama?  The former gave us wars in two countries when he promised the American people a “humble” foreign policy and no nation building when he was the GOP presidential nominee in 2000, while the latter positioned  himself as the “peace” candidate in 2008—and won overwhelmingly but is escalating military intervention in other Middle Eastern nations.  In short, the only major difference between Bush and Obama is that one is a white neoconservative and the other is a black neoconservative.

Tax windfalls, conspiracy theories and the end of the world

20 May

This week, we received some good news for a change about New Jersey’s economy and state budget. The number (13,400) of private sector job increased last month and income tax revenues are higher than the Christie administration forecast.  However, government jobs increased by 600.  Given the budget situation at both the state and local levels, why is there any new hiring occurring in government?  Local, county and state governments should be downsizing to bring their budgets under control, not increasing the cost of government.

Who won the first GOP presidential debate?

06 May

No one “won” the first GOP presidential debate Thursday night in South Carolina.   There were no “body blows” and gaffes, but three of the candidates continue to support America’s warfare state while Rep. Ron Paul and former New Mexico governor Gary Johnson want U.S. troops withdrawn from Afghanistan ASAP now that Osama Bin Laden is dead.
