The SCOTUS: You have arrived—the end of the road to serfdom

28 Jun

Yes America, the Supreme Court decided in a 5-4 decision to uphold Obamacare.  The Court ruled that the federal government can force you to purchase something you may not want and compel you to pay a penalty (the Obama administration’s argument) if you don’t and still be constitutional because it is a tax (the SCOTUS rationale).

New Jersey legislators: Just say no to the higher ed mergers

27 Jun

Let’s say you are the CEO of ABC Inc. and you want to merge with XYZ Inc., because you believe it will provide great synergies for both companies.  XYZ has $600 million in debt.  You go to your board of directors for approval, and they ask you how much it will cost to merge XYZ into ABC.  You say, “Trust me, the numbers will be forthcoming but we have to get this done by July 1.”

More useless theory of trickle down

Regarding Gordon Macinnes’ “Tax cuts could jeopardize N.J. recovery” (Other Views, June 19):

Macinnes makes a common egregious assertion about creating a robust economy. He contends that New Jersey’s economy was vibrant when the state “invested in new technologies and research.” However, he correctly points out that it was private-sector investment by Bell Labs and Big Pharma that was at the forefront of New Jersey’s boom years.

Macinnes has reversed the cause and effect of the reason New Jersey has been lagging the rest of the nation. For more than two decades, New Jersey’s finances have deteriorated under both Democrats and Republicans. Skyrocketing spending, mounting debt, soaring taxes and overbearing regulations have made New Jersey less attractive than many states in the South and Midwest to do business.

Business decision-makers know that the costs of doing business in New Jersey will make their return on investment problematic. The solution is clear: Fewer taxes, less in tax collections, less state spending and abolition of unnecessary regulations will do more for the New Jersey economy than trickle-down economics euphemistically called government investment.

Murray Sabrin

Fort Lee, June 19

The writer, a professor of finance at Ramapo College of New Jersey, has been a candidate for statewide office in New Jersey on both the Republican and Libertarian party lines.

Rand Paul rising?

20 Jun

A few days ago I sent the following Update to my email list. Did Rand Paul read it? See his essay published a few days later,http://www.ronpaul2012.com/2012/06/19/rand-paul-on-romney-and-unconstitutional-wars/

Sen. Rand Paul caused a firestorm by endorsing Mitt Romney. Sen. Paul could have deflected the criticism by stating that as Republican he wants to defeat a Democrat president who supports big government at home and abroad. Needless to say, he should have said that he has taken an oath to defend the constitution of the United States, not to support blindly the president even if he is a Republican. That’s why he should have said I look forward to working with Mitt Romney if he becomes president to protect and preserve the limited government principles of our Republic and challenge him when I believe he is not being true to his oath of office.

That would have satisfied Ron Paul’s supporters. Now Sen. Paul has lost a lot of credibilty with Ron Paul’s supporters who are the most loyal and hardest workers in American politics. Can Sen. Rand repair the damage? Only time will tell.

An important message from Dr. Alieta Eck

18 Jun

I received Dr. Eck’s email yesterday and am posting it here for all New Jerseyans to read.  The pending legislation that Dr. Eck cites below is another reason why government must be downsized to such a degree that it does not matter who is president, governor or serves in the Congress or the state legislature.  We are a long way from that day.  Until then, we have to fight the statists of both parties who want to be our masters.  What we are witnessing in New Jersey and around the country is the insight of the 19th century,”No man’s life, liberty, or property are safe while the Legislature is in session.”    “Freedom is not free” is what we hear today.  And that’s the truth.  Make your voice heard.

Lou Greenwald, the Willie Sutton of New Jersey

16 Jun

Call Lou Greenwald feisty or gutsy, but the moniker that best describes the Assembly Majority Leader from Camden is “Willie Sutton.”  Which is apropos inasmuch as Camden has one of the highest crime rates in the nation.

Ungrateful New Yorkers: Praise the Lord for Mayor Bloomberg

14 Jun

Michael Bloomberg’s net worth of $22 billion makes him the 11th richest person in America; he is also serving in his third term as mayor of the nation’s largest city.   If you have a net worth of $22 billion, you are one hell of a smart person with an IQ greater than the average Joe or Jane.

Rabbi Shmuley’s congressional candidacy: is it “kosher”?

08 Jun

On Tuesday June 5th, Rabbi Shmuley Boteach easily won the Republican primary in the Ninth Congressional District.  The rabbi will now square off against eight term congressman Bill Pascrell who trounced his long-time colleague Steve Rothman.  Rothman moved into the newly configured 9th CD rather than face Republican Rep. Scott Garrett whose new 5th CD now incorporates towns Rothman represents in the current 9th CD.
